I'm considering buying a camcorder which records in AVCHD format. Will it be possible to upload AVCHD format files to archive.org and have them be derived to create thumbnails and other formats that people can download and/or view via streaming (as is currently done with the mpeg2 format)?

Probably not. I'm sure there are some transcoders that support it though. Can you link me to a sample?

For samples, try these:

This describes the format:

There's an article on transcoding them in Linux here. I don't see any free software for Windows but from your article Nero Vision will convert them to a more widely accepted format.

What I was try to ask (in my original question) was if archive.org could automatically create thumbnails and streaming formats from uploaded AVCHD files. My goal is to get streaming content on archive.org, without having to do any format conversion myself. The step I would like to do are: Step 1. Record in avchd format (camcorder). Step 2. Upload the avchd file to archive.org. Step 3. Archive.org does the rest (automatically producing thumbnails and streaming content from the avchd file). My question was if archive.org could do step 3 (for avchd files). It is currently done for mpeg2 files. If the answer is no, then I suggest that feature be added. That way users of AVCHD camcorders will be able to upload their video directly, and have it be streamed.
